Extreme heat, overnight storms in the forecast this week

DES MOINES, IOWA — Early morning rain on Monday is just the start of a week of volatile weather in Central Iowa. The weather will vary from hot and humid daytime conditions to storm potential in the overnights to early mornings.

A Heat Advisory goes into effect at 1 PM Monday for the southern 2 tiers of counties. Highs will be in the low 90s and heat index values will go above 100°. As morning clouds clear, a thermal ridge builds in increasing the dewpoints and temperatures, especially across the southern half of Iowa.

There is a lot of moisture in our atmosphere leading to high dewpoints that make the hot temperatures feel even more uncomfortable this week. That moisture will be fuel for storms that can fire up during the overnight hours.

Storms Monday will fire up in the Dakotas and Nebraska by evening with the passage of a shortwave and will travel southeast towards Iowa through early Tuesday morning. Some of these storms may produce large hail and damaging winds and could impact the morning commute. We will have to see how strong they remain through morning coming out of the Dakotas.

The storms will push east and again a thermal ridge builds in with the return of afternoon sun and high humidity levels. Heat index values will again go above 100° on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Wednesday looks to be the hottest day with highs in the upper 90s.
