    How much rain did we get? Overnight storm brings more than 3 inches of rain to Des Moines

    Des Moines has seen sporadic, but heavy, rainfall since Monday, surpassing monthly rainfall averages for July.

    Des Moines surpassed a daily rainfall record for July as well. Central and southern Iowa saw the bulk of the rainfall. Not only have the last few days been rainy, severe weather also brought in thunderstorm, high winds, power outages and shelf clouds , however, no tornadoes occurred from the storms.

    So how much rain did Des Moines get?

    What were the rainfall totals for Des Moines since Monday?

    Since Monday at 8 a.m., Des Moines has seen 4.52 inches of rain with the majority falling early Wednesday morning. Rainfall from midnight to 8 a.m. Wednesday reached 3.46 inches at the Des Moines International Airport. Monthly rainfall for Des Moines in July averages around 3.82 inches, according to National Weather Service data from 1991 to 2020 for the city.

    "We got nearly all of that just with one rainfall," said Brad Small, NWS meteorologist. "It is safe to say we got a large chunk of our monthly rainfall just from one event."

    What is the daily rainfall record for Des Moines?

    The old 24-hour record for July was 1.91 inches set in 2021. Wednesday alone surpassed this record with a total rainfall of 3.46 inches of rain as of 8 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. From 9 a.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Des Moines saw 3.9 inches of rain.

    How many lost power in Des Moines?

    After thunderstorms occurred early morning Wednesday, some Des Moines residents were with out power. Just more than 1,100 MidAmerican customers lost power, with a couple dozen of other customers experiencing outages across the state, according to MidAmerican . The total number of MidAmerican customers without power in Iowa amounted to 1,207.

    Here are the Iowa towns with the highest amount of rainfall since Monday at 8 a.m.

    • Pella: 5.22 inches
    • Des Moines: 4.52 inches
    • Knoxville: 2.83 inches

    Is there more rain forecasted for the rest of the week?

    Thunderstorms are likely between 10 p.m. and 1 p.m. Wednesday into early Thursday morning for Des Moines. The chance of precipitation is 60% and new rainfall could amount to 1 to 2 inches, according to the National Weather Service .

    The rest of the week looks drier, Small told the Register, but there is potential for more severe weather Wednesday evening.

    "This pattern should shut down later this week, and we will get a break from what we have seen the past few days," Small said.
