    Iowa may finally be catching a break from heavy showers after much of central Iowa saw multiple inches of rain during the last week of July. The eastern side of Iowa saw more rainfall kicking off August.

    In total, Des Moines saw 8.99 inches of rain in July, with nearly half of that rainfall coming in the last week of the month. The first week of August is predicted to mostly sunny and hot for Des Moines, bringing the thunderstorm trend to an end — hopefully.

    Des Moines set a daily rainfall record on Wednesday with a total of 3.55 inches . Monthly rainfall for Des Moines in July averages around 3.82 inches, according to National Weather Service data from 1991 to 2020 for the city.

    Here are the Iowa cities that had the most rain from midnight Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday.

    • Des Moines: 3.55 inches
    • Knoxville: 1.89 inches
    • Pella: 1.88 inches
    • Ottumwa: 1.86 inches

    Will Des Moines get more rain this week?

    Thursday is predicted to be sunny in Des Moines with a high of 88 degrees followed by clear skies into the evening. The temperatures are expected to keep increasing into the weekend, with a high of 89 degrees for Friday and 91 degrees for Saturday, according to the National Weather Service's seven-day forecast.
