JR’s SouthPork Ranch unveils new items ahead of State Fair, including 2-foot lobster roll

DES MOINES, Iowa — They’ve done it again.

Last year, JR’s SouthPork Ranch claimed the title of most expensive food item. The lobster roll featuring fresh lobster sourced from Maine sold for $31 each. This year the popular food vendor is offering a two-foot-long version for $100 each.

“It can feed one. It can also feed up to six,” owner Brooks Reynolds said.

They found out last year people were willing to pay for fresh lobster.

“We served over 2,000 pounds of lobster during the state fair last year,” chef Sara Tuttle said.

Several new, less expensive options are also being added to the menu .

“We try to change it up every year. That’s the fun part of being a concessionaire here at the Iowa State Fair. We start thinking about next year’s fair, the day after the fair. I mean, we are constantly thinking of ways to enhance our fair menu, change it up, try new things, bring things that haven’t been here at the Iowa State Fair,” Reynolds said.

The 2024 Iowa State Fair opens August 8th and runs through the 18th.
