DES MOINES, Iowa — The modest building that stands at 3206 University Avenue has undergone a complete transformation. What was once the School of Education building at Drake University has new life as a centerpiece for feeding Des Moines.

“It’s this very nondescript building on a very nondescript avenue in the city. But it is probably one of the best-hidden gems in the city,” says Lynn Pritchard, executive chef at Hugo’s, the restaurant that serves as a window to the greater mission.

That greater mission is serving thousands of meals a day through a second kitchen which is led by Wesley Life’s Meals on Wheels program. “There’s so much going on in this building but the heart and soul of this and really the reason that so many people supported our capital campaign and believe in what we’re doing is the kitchen,” explained Shannon Draayer, Executive Director of Community Nutrition. “So this expanded kitchen triples our capacity to serve those in need.”

Meals on Wheels makes, packages, and delivers 2,000 meals per day to those in need. That number has more than doubled since moving into their new building. Drake University donated the building thanks to a major donation from Des Moines Philanthropist Suzie Glazer Burt.

The extra space opened the possibilities for Meals on Wheels. Not only do they have a full-time tenant in the ‘surprisingly Mediterranean’ restaurant, Hugo’s Wood-Fired Kitchen, but they also created the nation’s only hydroponic operation affiliated with Meals on Wheels. The basement was transformed to house the fresh leafy greens that have already been dished out in 20,000 Meals on Wheels deliveries. The greens are also used in creating uniquely fresh menu items at Hugo’s — completing the circle of symmetry.

“So we’re able to really show what it means to create healthy food that’s brought to those who aren’t able to go out to a grocery store and purchase that local fresh produce,” said Draayer.

It’s a farm-to-table across the community concept. One of a kind. All in one stop. “Food is one of the few things that can absolutely unite our humanity and our civility,’ said Pritchard “we’re trying to be part of that common thread in that tapestry.”

If you or someone you know are in need of services from Meals on Wheels or if you’d like to volunteer visit WesleyLife.org or call 515-699-3240

Hugo’s Wood-Fired Kitchen is now open Tuesday through Sunday starting at 11 AM.
