New Rec Center set to break ground in October
Your browser does not support the audio element. Arrangements for the new recreation center in Artesia are underway as the design phase of the project continues. There will be a groundbreaking on October 17, according to Construction Manager agency Scott Taylor. Jaynes Corporation, the contractor building the rec center, will begin construction on the plot of land south of the Artesia Aquatic Center on October 21.
Artesia named top-10 place to raise a family

The 2024 report gave the town an “A-” overall score, taking into account categories including schools, housing and weather. Artesia scored an A+ in jobs, and an A in public schools and in diversity. The lowest score for Artesia is a C+ for Crime and Safety.

Battling loud cars with technology
Nick Ferenchak likes his quiet — whether sleeping at night or hiking in the Sandia Mountains — and he has a plan to preserve his quietude from noisy vehicles. Ferenchak, an assistant professor in the Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at the University of New Mexico, is the president of Not-A-Loud, a local company that creates noise camera systems that take pictures of the license plates on vehicles that produce too many decibels. The systems are made in town, he said.

City of Gallup to mill streets starting July 8
The City of Gallup will be closing some streets around the city starting July 8. The project is expected to go on until July 26. Princeton Avenue from McKinley Drive to the end of the curb and Wilson Avenue from McKinley Drive to a dead end will be milled during that time. The mining is in advance of paving that will happen at a later date.
