We need a "competent" mayor for New York: Governor Cuomo refuses to end his problem with Mayor de Blasio

Governor Andrew Cuomo seems to think it's a long time and refuses to back down in his rhetorical battle with Bill de Blasio, despite the fact that they are both from the same party.

Although the Democratic primary results are unlikely to be available until July, Cuomo hailed Eric Adams' strong lead yesterday, while underlining his desire to see a fresh face at the helm of municipal government in the nation's largest metropolis.

Cuomo frequently blasted De Blasio during a news conference yesterday in Manhattan, the day after the face-to-face vote on Tuesday, and predicted that his relationship with his successor "will be better, by definition."

“There are hundreds of mayors in New York, I workwith all of them,” Cuomo said.

“It’s hard for me to work with an administration that is hyper-political and is not competent.”

Cuomo congratulated Adams but said that he wasn't sure if the first-choice results from Tuesday's ranked-choice voting meant the Brooklyn borough president and retired NYPD captain would win. But Cuomo said, “I think in general electing a new mayor is very, very positive for the city.”

“Confidence in the mayor is very, very important. Confidence in the leadership of the mayor and the competence of the mayor is very important,” he said.

“And I think with a new mayor, you’re gonna see both an increase in the confidence in leadership and increase in the competence of the management of New York City.”

Cuomo raged against the city's escalating crime and homelessness issues, labeling the city's quality of life the "the pressing issue of the day."

Cuomo said he had an excellent connection with Adams, a former state senator from Brooklyn, and anticipated that his position as a former officer would help him “instill confidence.” “I think he is a person who will step up and show real leadership, especially on issues of quality of life and crime,” quoted the New York Post.

Meanwhile, Cuomo is dealing with his own inner demons, including new claims of sexual harassment, power abuse while authoring a book, and investigations into mass fatalities in nursing facilities. Nonetheless, he has not abandoned his ambition to run for reelection to the job he has held since 2011. His late father, Mario Cuomo, was also governor for three terms (1983-1994), until he was defeated in a re-election bid by George Pataki.

The "vote by classification" or "instant- runoff" intended to avoid repeating instances such as De Blasio's election as mayor in 2013, despite the fact that only 3% of those registered in the Democratic Party in NYC voted for him in the primary. And in 2017, he was comfortably re-elected, with no opposition from his party.

In recent years, the relationship between De Blasio and Cuomo has worsened, with reciprocal allegations about the city's declining quality of life. During the epidemic, the battles escalated, with both sides giving contradicting instructions on several occasions, causing confusion among the populace and wasting resources.
