    313 Day, Oscars preview party and Day of Fashion: Things to do in Detroit this week

    With this warm weather, there’s no need for your overcoats on the virtual red carpet this weekend, Detroiters! Oscars weekend is upon us, and there are plenty of ways to feel the excitement of Hollywood’s most glamorous awards weekend.

    Read on for Oscar-themed events, Women’s History Month offerings, 313 Day celebrations and more ways to get out and strut your stuff!

    A touch of Tinsel Town in the Motor City

    🎶 Jam out all weekend long to a two-hour show by the Detroit Symphony at Orchestra Hall. The show will feature Academy Award-winning music from some of Hollywood’s greatest Red Carpet Film Scores like “The Godfather” and “Casablanca”! $24-$110. Advance tickets only.

    🎥 Ready for your closeup? Feel like a Hollywood star on Saturday afternoon at the special Oscars Preview Party at the Detroit Public Library’s Main Branch. Don your A-list attire at the “Paparazzi Photo Station” and enjoy free popcorn and screenings of the Oscar-nominated animated features. Free.

    🎞️ Catch a special showcase of the 2024 Oscar-nominated short films in both the animation and live action categories at the Detroit Film Theater (at the Detroit Institute of Arts) with one showing on Thursday, two showing on Saturday and one on Sunday. The live action lineup includes Danish, Canadian and American films, while the 15-film animation category showcase includes films from Estonia to Mexico! $10.50 general admission, $8.50 for seniors, students and museum members.

    🖥️ Do you love a good spreadsheet? All of you Excel gurus can head to Wayne State University (or pop in online) to celebrate Open Data Day with Detroitography. The event celebrates the ways open data can be used to solve real-world problems. You’ll also learn about DetroitData, an open data portal relaunching for the benefit of all Detroiters. Free.

    🎨 Check out an exciting Gallery Wall Opening with textile artist Stephanie Hoff at Atwater Brewery in Rivertown. Hoff draws her inspiration from 1960s textile and clothing designs to create colorful, wearable art. Free. 21+.

    📖 🖼️ Head on down to 27th Letter Books in Southwest Detroit to j oin the opening reception for artist Ryan Standfest’s “Illustrations Without a Text.” The body of work is a set of drawings originally made for a poet’s book. Stay for light refreshments and to mingle with other art lovers, and while you’re at it, check out Standfest’s other mural “Supply & Demand” right outside the bookshop. Free.

    👗 Dress to impress and toast to local creativity on Friday at Detroit Day of Fashion , hosted by Baby Belle at Fantazma Market & Cafe in Corktown! You’ll meet up-and-coming designers and gain insights from fashion experts. Make sure to snag your $20 VIP ticket early; advance tickets only.

    🎹 Stay in Corktown Friday night and strut over to Motor City Wine with your new fashionista friends for some wine, jazz and funk with Hazmat Live on the keys. 21+. $5 cover.

    🌅 Start your Saturday morning in serenity with Sunrise Yoga in Core City. Instructor Melissa Wagasy from Citizen Yoga will lead an hour-long, all-levels yoga class. Yogis can arrive early and stay afterward for breakfast and beats from DJ Three Thirteen . Bring your own mat. $35. Registration required.

    🪡 Learn about talented women of Oakman Boulevard who came together to sew a quilt at Piecing it All Together, hosted at the Detroit Public Library Parkman Branch. Examine the community quilt and hear the history behind each patch. Refreshments provided. Free.

    📚 Join Ross Gay , bestselling author, poet and essayist at the Visiting Writers Series with Michigan Poet Laureate Nandi Comer on Saturday evening at Wayne State University’s Hilberry Gateway. This special event will include readings by Gay and Comer, and performances by poets at InsideOut Literary Arts . All proceeds benefit InsideOut’s writing programs for young people. $25-$60. Advance tickets only.

    🔎 Enjoy a Women’s History Month Scavenger Hunt at the Detroit Public Library Jefferson Branch on Monday night. Locate pictures of all the women around the building and win a prize! Free.
