Outlier awarded international prize for outstanding journalism and community building

The Association of Media of Information and Communication (AMIC) awarded Outlier Media its inaugural International Award for Local Media. Outlier won the juried prize for “being a good example of how local journalism can serve to inform, engage, and meet the needs of its citizenry.” The jury highlighted the newsroom’s diverse, woman-led team in Detroit. Jurists also noted the innovative products, excellence in web product design and use of new communication methods to motivate reader participation.

The awards ceremony was held in Barcelona, Spain, at La Pedrera on March 19. The audience included newsroom leaders from across Europe. Outlier’s Executive Director Candice Fortman presented highlights of Outlier’s work.

“We are truly honored to receive this recognition,” Fortman said. “Our team is dedicated to serving our community and ensuring everyone in Detroit has equitable access to the information they need to make informed decisions — and to connect more deeply with the city and one another. This award is a testament to the impact that our work has had on the lives of Detroit residents and the journalism ecosystem.”

Ramon Grau, president of the AMIC, remarked that the association “works to dignify the work and promote these awards to focus on local media. These recognitions promote best practices and innovation in journalistic companies.”

Hundreds of journalists from newsrooms across Europe were also honored during the ceremony. Outlier received a trophy crafted by a local artisan and 5,000 euros for the recognition.
