Tarik Skubal entered the season as one of the favorites to win the AL Cy Young this year. On Sunday he reminded us why, turning in another top-notch performance.

Skubal gave up one run on four hits across seven innings as the Tigers beat the Royals 4-1 to win their third straight series.

Skubal, 4-0 through six starts, dropped his ERA to 1.72, among the top five in the American League.

The Royals’ lone run of the day came right off the bat as Skubal allowed back-to-back hits before settling in to retire 12 batters in a row and 20 out of 21. His day ended after working his way out of a two-out jam in the 7th.

He racked up six Ks against a Royals team that entered Sunday with the second fewest strikeouts in all of baseball.

While the Tigers found themselves in an early deficit after the top of the first inning, it didn’t last long as Wenceel Perez hit his first career home run, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the frame.

Detroit tacked on runs through a Riley Greene sac fly in the 2nd and a Jake Rogers solo homer in the 6th.

With Kenta Maeda on the mound, the Tigers welcome the Cardinals to Comerica Park Monday night.
