We’re gearing up for Mother’s Day weekend and honoring Mental Health Awareness Month with a lineup of things to do in the 313!

Dive into the drama of Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar at El Club on Friday, or hop on your bike for a group ride on Saturday afternoon with Cruise: Detroit. And of course, Sunday is all about celebrating moms with flowers and pastries at the Royal Oak in Bloom flower show!

We recognize Mother’s Day can be difficult for some people. Take care of yourselves, and keep reading for more ways to connect and thrive this weekend.

    Let’s get busy! 💛

    Thursday

🙋🏾 Learn how to care for your child’s mental health at Detroit Public Library Main Branch through an interactive workshop. In honor of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, school principal and mental health professional Lavar Drummond will share ways to support kids’ well-being based on his book “Affirmation Heroes.” Free.

🚲 Grab your two-wheeled stallion (your bike, silly) and join in on the People for Palmer Park Bike Ride ! Wear your helmet and meet near the splash pad in Palmer Park before take off at 6:30 p.m. From one rider to another: Come prepared with bike lights and a spare inner tube just in case. It’s a no-drop ride, so no rider should be left behind. Free.

    This weekend

🥩 Where’s the beef this weekend? We’re glad you asked. Get down to the drama between Drake and Kendrick Lamar Friday night at El Club in Southwest Detroit. DJ Killa Squid will be on the decks bringing the best of these feuding kings of hip-hop. Now for the burning question: Drizzy’s “Family Matters” or K-Dot’s “Euphoria”? 18+. $13.60.

🎙️ Take a trip down memory lane at Yellow Brick Ballads, a concert from the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit.  opens to the public Friday at the Detroit Film Theatre with three more showings throughout May. The choir will blend genres from techno to gospel and is sure to delight. $10-$25.

🎉 Shine the spotlight on Spot Lite on Friday and Saturday for the club’s third anniversary ! This community-focused hotspot has become a bastion of creativity in Detroit. Hip hip, hooray! DJs Dez Andrés , Father Dukes , Stacey Hotwaxx Hale , Tammy Lakkis and so many more amazing artists will be dropping the beats. 21+. $5-10 per day.

🩺 Head to the Southwest Greenway Health Crawl on Saturday morning. Enjoy the pedestrian and bicycle path through the outskirts of Corktown while caring for yourself with Zumba, blood pressure screenings, guided meditation and cardio drumming. Free.

🖋️ Bust out some (poetic) rhymes on Saturday at a poetry workshop at Next Chapter Books on Detroit’s eastside. InsideOut Literary Arts and the Detroit Zoological Society (aka the Detroit Zoo) will help you explore the relationship between poetry and the natural world in this participatory experience. Free.

🏳️‍🌈 Explore the city by bicycle Saturday afternoon with Cruise: Detroit’s Dancing on Two Wheels ! This welcoming cycling club for LGBTQ+-identifying folks and friends hosts rides throughout the warm weather season. Saturday’s ride departs from Spot Lite. You’ll make stops at Two Birds for Huddle Soft Serve and Brewery Faisan for the El Taco Dojo food truck as you spin by The Heidelberg Project, among other Detroit gems. Snap some pics and send them our way ! Free.

💐 Celebrate Mother’s Day at the 30th annual Royal Oak in Bloom flower, plant and garden show featuring more than 75 vendors. Peruse garden delights like perennials and outdoor decorations like wind chimes, porch swings and etched stones. You can also treat mom to a breakfast treat from Mystic Kettle, Detroit Black Coffee or The Little Donut Factory. Free.

    Next week

📚 Join New York Times bestselling author Alice Randall on Monday night at Detroit Public Library Main Branch for the debut of her latest nonfiction book , “My Black Country: A Journey Through Country Music’s Black Past, Present, and Future.” The native Detroiter will share the stage with City of Detroit Arts and Culture Director Rochelle Riley . There will be copies of the book on sale from Source Booksellers. We wonder if Beyoncé’s got an advanced copy … Free.

🐕 Pregame the Tigers game at Pups and Pints on Tuesday. Hockeytown Cafe will have beer specials for people and Pup Cups (whipped cream and Milk-Bone treats) for their four-legged friends. Then bring your pooch to Bark in the Park at Comerica Park later that day to watch some baseball. “Paw-sitively” cute, huh? We thought so, too. Pups and Pints is free to attend; game tickets are about $34 for a dog and human duo.
