Detroit’s only Filipino bakery is starting a new chapter. JP Makes and Bakes is slated to open at 6529 Woodward Avenue, Suite B in Detroit this summer. The space was previously occupied by Fern, a small clothing boutique. This news was first seen on Eater Detroit .

Jonathan Peregrino , owner of JP Makes and Bakes, was a semifinalist for Hatch Detroit, a contest where participants competed against each other for the $100,000 seed funding. Since the competition, Peregrino has been hosting popup events at various events and local businesses across the metro, including Craig’s Coffee in Midtown, or Secret Bakery in Ferndale, according to Eater’s coverage.

Peregrino stepped away from a 15-year career in sales and marketing to pursue his pastry chef dream. However, Peregrino has always invested in his craft as he has received training from Academy of Pastry & Bakery Arts Philippines. In that sense, Peregrino is simply returning to his roots by devoting himself to his new business venture.

While working on opening his first store, Peregrino also currently serves as Pastry Sous Chef at Method Hospitality’s Le Supreme, located inside the book tower. Right now, he makes everything out of his home kitchen and offers gluten free and vegan options.

Based on information on the website, JP Makes and Bakes carry a wide variety of cakes, cookies, and brownies, as well as traditional Filipino bread rolls: Pan de Sal. According to Eater, Peregrino also plans to offer a rotating selection of savory meals for those needing a quick bite, including options like rice bowls and simple entrees.

Peregrino posted on Instagram announcing his new space last week, showing interior photos of an empty shell space. What Now Detroit reached out to Peregrino but hadn’t heard back by the time of this coverage.
