This week’s events are all about connecting with the community and soaking up some Detroit culture.
Start your Thursday with a chill (probably iced!) coffee hang at La Ventana Cafe from us at Outlier Media. Then get your art fix at this year’s Michigan Glass Project, feast on bites and drinks at the Detroit Taco and Tequila Fest, or get the kiddos reading at the SOAR Detroit Summer Book Club for Kids.
From artsy adventures to foodie fun, there’s something for everyone. Stay cool and healthy and see you out there!
Thursday
☕ Delight in casual coffee and conversation at Outlier’s Coffee Thursday at La Ventana Cafe on Gratiot Avenue by Eastern Market. Chat it up with the staff about things happening in the city, connect with other residents and enjoy a hot (or cold) cup of joe on us! Free.
🍏 Bring the kids to the Detroit Public Library Sherwood Forest Branch on Friday for Gardening and Fitness Classes for Kids . Those bundles of energy can learn to plant fruits and vegetables and taste-test healthy snacks (yum!) before exploring indoor and outdoor exercises. Free.
🔥 Have your mind — or rather, glass — blown at the Russell Industrial Center all weekend long at this year’s Michigan Glass Project . Feel the warm flames as skilled artists melt, shape and blow glass into exciting forms. Musicians, painters and graffiti artists will join for a jam-packed weekend of tie-dye demos, yoga and creative expression. $30 for a day pass, $75 for a weekend pass, free for kids ages 12 and under.

🍍 Enjoy a night out on Takoi’s patio in Corktown on Friday for the kick-off of Passion Fruit . The monthly summer event series aims to connect Detroiters with food, cocktails, music and community. DJs Drew Pompa , Peter Croce , and David A-P will serve up the musical selections for partygoers sipping on tasty drinks and slurping on noodles. Friday’s event will also serve as a fundraiser for Keep Growing Detroit . Free.
👩🏽🌾 Get your hands dirty and support local farmers for Detroit Urban Farm Beautification Day on Saturday at Detroit Farm & Cider on Lawrence Street. Contribute to Detroit’s sustainability, learn how to grow fruit trees in the city and meet some new farming friends! If you miss this one, there will be several more this summer. Registration required by completing this form . Free.
🤠 Hoot and holler at your favorite local bands on Saturday at Howdy Fest III at The Old Miami. Take your chance at a mechanical bull (we’ll pass), munch on some good food by Ms. Ruth’s Catering, and tip your cowboy hat to music from VOLK , Laurel Hells Ramblers , Barstool Brown , Suede Brain and many others! Free for kids under 12. $20 in advance, $25 day of show.
🌮 Quench your thirst and feed your belly on Saturday at the Detroit Taco and Tequila Fest on Belle Isle. Festival goers can taste 100 tequilas (we don’t recommend trying all of them), but if that’s not your drink of choice, sip on margaritas, sangria, beer and nonalcoholic drinks. Then chow down on yummy tacos, tortas, nachos and burritos! A quesabirria sounds amazing right about now! $50 in advance, $55 day of festival.
🏚️ Enjoy more fun in the sun at the 10th annual Log Cabin Day & Ice Cream Social at Palmer Park. Cool off from the heat with ice cream from Guernsey Farms Dairy (free for the first 500 visitors), then enjoy tours of the historic log cabin, weaving demonstrations by Michael Daitch , dancing and puppetry with Detroit Square Dance Society, and other Victorian-era artistic delights. If you’re feeling fancy, you can make your own hat with Dream Arts Co. for prizes. If you have a beat, stop by the modest James Smith House while you’re in the area. Free.
Next week
📚 Help your kiddo pick out a new book at SOAR Detroit’s Summer Book Club for Kids . The club will meet on Tuesdays at Detroit Public Library Duffield Branch on West Grand Boulevard. Kids will chat about their books and participate in fun activities based on their reads. Free.
📰 Speaking of books, head over to Next Chapter Books in East English Village on Tuesday as it hosts author Barbara Henning for a reading from her book , “Ferne, A Detroit Story.” Henning, who was born in the city, will share how she used photos, newspaper clippings and other historic artifacts to tell her mother’s story. Free.
