Pistons approach draft with new "CEO" but no coach

The Pistons have the fifth pick in Wednesday's NBA draft, but with a lackluster field of prospects, attention is on who the team's next head coach will be.

Catch up quick: The Pistons fired Monty Williams after he led the team to the worst single-season record in its history, 14-68.

    • Williams was the league's highest-paid coach, and the team spent $65 million to buy out his contract.

Driving the news: The team introduced former Pelicans GM Trajan Langdon as the new president of basketball operations and "CEO" last week. Owner Tom Gores told reporters the 48-year-old former pro was the perfect candidate to operate the Pistons like he does his $9 billion equity company.

What they're saying: "I'm frustrated — not really angry — I'm just disappointed that I haven't pleased the fans," Gores told 97.1 The Ticket's Jeff Riger . "They deserve more and I understand that."

State of play: Langdon last week hinted the Pistons may trade their fifth pick in what experts are panning as a weak draft. Should Detroit keep the pick, the Free Press' Omari Sankofa III suggested five potential fits :

    • G League Ignite forward Matas Buzelis
    • Colorado forward Cody Williams
    • UConn guard Stephon Castle
    • G League Ignite forward Ron Holland
    • Providence guard Devin Carter

The draft airs on ABC, ESPN and ESPN+.

    • The first round starts at 8pm.
