A Delta Airlines flight traveling from Detroit to Amsterdam was forced to make an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York on Wednesday morning. The diversion stemmed from concerns over “spoiled” food served to passengers on board Delta flight 136.

According to reports, after mid-flight meals were distributed, a number of passengers began experiencing illness.

The flight crew, upon learning of the situation, contacted medical professionals on the ground. Out of an abundance of caution and prioritizing passenger well-being, the decision was made to divert the flight to JFK Airport.

“Delta flight 126 from Detroit to Amsterdam diverted to New York’s JFK early Wednesday morning after reports that a portion of the Main Cabin in-flight meal service was spoiled,” said a Delta Airlines spokesperson in a statement.

“There were 24 aided cases upon landing, including ten members of the flight crew and 14 passengers, all of whom declined to receive medical attention,” said the statement. “Passengers were provided with hotel rooms and transportation and will be rebooked to continue to their destination.”

The plane landed safely at JFK at around 4:00 am, where medical personnel were waiting to assist those affected.

Delta Airlines expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers and is investigating the incident to determine how the allegedly spoiled food made it onto the flight.

The airline has promised to rebook passengers on the next available flights to Amsterdam.
