Detroit mass shooting at block party leaves 2 dead, 18 injured

A  mass shooting left two people dead and 18 more wounded early Sunday at a block party in Detroit’s notorious gang-riddled “Red Zone,” according to reports.

A 22-year-old unidentified man allegedly opened fire about 2:25 a.m. on the East Side in an area dubbed the “Red Zone” by the local Seven Miles Bloods Street Gang, according to Click On Detroit.

A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head and a 21-year-old man killed by a bullet to his back, the outlet said.

All of Sunday’s victims ranged from 17 to 28 years old, cops said.

One of them — a 17-year-old girl — is in critical condition, reports said. Thirteen other people are in serious condition, while three are stable, the outlet said.

Several of the victims are reportedly in surgery.

The man who opened fire was shot in his left leg and taken into custody, the outlet said. He is hospitalized in stable condition.

The northeast Detroit neighborhood is one of the city’s most dangerous, according to Newsweek.

“The problem is the normalcy of these shootings,” Detroit Police Commissioner Ricardo Moore said, according to the Detroit News . “Come Jan. 1, the police will say crime is down, and then we’ll start all over again. Funeral homes, hospitals and florist are the only people who profit from Detroit crime.”

On June 1, four people were shot at a massive block party on the West Side, the Detroit News said.

Just over a week earlier, a teenage girl was shot and killed at another party just four blocks away from Sunday’s bloodbath, the outlet added.

City cops and the Michigan State Police were still working Sunday’s scene to figure out what happened, Fox 2 Detroit said.

The Michigan State Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
