For the first time in his career, Canadian celebrity chef Matty Matheson has become a partner at a U.S. restaurant — and it’s right here in Detroit. On Wednesday, Standby , the downtown cocktail bar and new American eatery, announced Matheson had joined on as a partner, and in conjunction, will be debuting a new menu at the restaurant.

“I grew up in a border town, and I loved it,” said Matheson in a press release. “I would go over to Buffalo to eat at old diners and hot dog stands or watch punk shows. I believe that Detroit and Buffalo share many similarities: both are quintessentially American, working-class cities renowned for their storied food culture. I have a lot of respect and admiration for cities like that, and I’m excited to add to the fold of what makes Detroit such an iconic city.”

On the popular FX series The Bear , Matheson plays handyman Neil Fak and has been a producer on the show since its first season in 2022. He is also credited as executive producer on seasons 2 and 3. He made his name as a chef in Canada before developing a more widespread audience with cooking videos on Munchies and other Vice titles. His cookbooks Matty Matheson: A Cookbook and Home Style Cookery are both New York Times -bestsellers.

Matheson currently owns several other restaurants in Ontario with Our House Hospitality Company , his Toronto-based agency. This is the first time Matheson is dipping his toe into the American restaurant market.

Standby’s new summer menu, created by Matheson, premieres July 19. It will include Coconut Shrimp and Jerk Mayo, Mortadella Sliders, Alabama BBQ Grilled Wings, Steak Frites au Poivre, and Taquitos, according to the press release.

The restaurant debuted in 2015 in The Belt, the mural-covered alley in downtown Detroit near Campus Martius. It has since earned two James Beard semifinalist nods in 2017 and 2018 — both in the Outstanding Bar Program category. Its other partners are mixologist Joe Robinson and Anthony Curis, who owns the nearby Library Street Art Collective gallery.

According to the press release, there may be “ more future projects” to be expected between Matheson and the Standby team.

Standby is located at 225 Gratiot Ave in Detroit . For more information and to make a reservation, visit standbydetroit.com .
