Michigan Native Opens Studio Vera Salon in Detroit’s Woodbridge Neighborhood

After 12 years of working in the beauty salon industry, Kelsie Angst decided to open Studio Vera at 1521 Putnam St. in Detroit’s Woodbridge neighborhood.

The interior was designed with Parini Interior Design in Detroit with brand consultant Shirakaba Studio, and features warm, natural hues and textures.

The exterior of the building includes a mural by local artist India Solomon.

Historically, stylists have had only the option of set commissions based on a sales percentage. At Studio Vera, the stylists are offered daily rates or equitable commission-based rates to rent one of eight available chairs. The stylists also have access to training programs under the mentorship of Angst.

There also is a space for an esthetician and a cosmetologist to offer their services.

Angst says she is branching off from her previous co-founded venture, Lynwood Studio in Ferndale, to realize her full vision. Part of that vision required the location to be in the city of Detroit where she has lived for seven years.

Angst studied fashion at American InterNational University in London and earned a cosmetology degree from Paul Mitchell the School in Chicago. Her first job landed her in Grand Rapids before joining Village Parlor in Detroit.
