LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– The U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office seized 90 Giant African Snails at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DWT) on June 30, 2024.

The stash of live snails was discovered after a passenger arriving from Ghana was referred for a secondary examination after declaring fresh food items, according to a news release.

“These snails are an invasive species that could negatively impact our economy,” said Acting Port Director John Nowak. “Our agriculture specialists are always keeping a watchful eye out for harmful plants, animals and insects.”

An odd odor coming out of a tied, woven bag caught the attention of agriculture specialists during the baggage inspection. The giant snails ranged from 3 to 6 inches in length.

The passenger also began declaring other prohibited items like beef skin and fresh peppers.

Though the snails were intended for consumption, Giant African Snails have a voracious appetite and can cause major crop damage. According to the news release, they can also pose a public health threat to humans.
