Shooting at Detroit gas station leaves young woman in critical condition, three injured

DETROIT (WWJ) A shooting at a gas station on Detroit’s east side left a woman in critical condition and three others injured.

Detroit Police said the suspect walked into a gas station at Gratiot and Van Dyke on Monday around 9 p.m.

“He appeared agitated, stated that he had people following him,” Detroit Police Chief James White said during a press briefing. “…At some point, he exits the gas station, goes back to his vehicle. Random citizens, innocent citizens pull in…he fires indiscriminately approximately nine times, striking three people. We know four people are injured.”

According to White; a woman in her twenties who “may be pregnant" is listed in critical condition.

Two men—one in his twenties, and one in his thirties—are in stable condition. Another woman in her twenties was also injured, but police cannot yet confirm if she was shot; White said.

Her condition was not released.

Police arrested the suspect, a man who “appears to be” in his sixties, “without incident” and recovered the weapon.

White said the suspect had a conversation about “being tired of kids, tired of people following him” with an employee of the gas station before firing the shots. The suspect was also wearing a medical bracelet.

As more people pulled up to the gas station, the suspect waved people off and would not let them into the building.

“Thank goodness they couldn’t get inside, or it could have been a lot more tragic than it was,” White said.

Officers arrived “heroically and quickly” within two minutes, according to White.

He said they will investigate if the suspect had a history of mental illness.

“This is tragic. This unnecessary,” White said. “We have been here before talking about mental health and gun violence. We as the police department are doing everything we can. We need the community to stay vigilant and help us with this.”
