Report: Dodgers, Orioles 'interested in putting together packages' for Tigers' Tarik Skubal

Will someone make a Godfather offer for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal? According to a recent report, at least two teams have discussed it.

Skubal is the favorite to win the American League Cy Young award this year after a dominant first half of the season before the All-Star break in which he went 10-3 with a 2.41 ERA and is at the top of almost every statistical metric.

Despite that, Skubal was not selected by American League manager Bruce Bochy to start the All-Star Game, with the veteran manager instead opting for Baltimore Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes. But that snub has done nothing to diminish his value.

Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci reported Monday that sources from both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles have "confirmed they are interested in putting together packages loaded with top prospects for Skubal."

For both teams, Skubal is reportedly "at the top of their shopping list."

The Tigers still have two more years of team control on Skubal after this season, meaning there is no real rush to trade the ace if they decide they can't sign him to a long-term contract. However, if the Tigers do decide to part ways with him, he will have more value the earlier they trade him.

Verducci said there is "no indication yet" on what Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris plans to do with Skubal, but added the Tigers lack the requiste amount of impact bats needed to truly compete.

Both the Orioles and Dodgers have been dealing with injuries in their starting rotations this year, but otherwise have teams ready-made to win a World Series and the prospects to potentially get a deal done.

Will either team make an offer the Tigers can't refuse?

The trade deadline is set for July 30, with games scheduled to pick back up on Friday after the All-Star break. The Tigers are 47-50 on the season and would figure to be sellers at the deadline, but won eight of their last 10 games before the break.
