The Tuesday experience at Eastern Market

    Good morning,

While in our downtown newsroom Tuesday, which is not a normal office day for me, I remembered that Detroit's Eastern Market Tuesday Market was open.

The Tuesday Market operates 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. June through September. Inside Shed 2, it's a scaled-down version of the Saturday market.

I adore the Saturday market. But depending on the time, so do thousands of others. It's a super-busy spot Saturday mornings for shopping and dining. And that's a good thing!

But on a Tuesday, if I need just a few things, I can buzz over on my lunch hour, get what I need and head back to the office. Parking is so much easier. I found a spot quickly and right across from the entrance. Because it's a smaller market with fewer vendors, you're not constantly bumping into people and spending your visit repeating "Excuse me."

Several farm vendors had plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables this Tuesday. There were lots of greens, beautiful candy onion bulbs and fresh blueberries. Ears of corn, baskets of tomatoes and early peaches lined one table. That display reminded me that the market will soon be flush with some of Michigan's best homegrown fruits and vegetables. I grabbed an overfilled quart of tomatoes for $5.

Picking up the juicy tomatoes, my thoughts immediately turned to making BLTs. Here, by the way, is one of my favorite ways to cook bacon for BLTs, a perfect summer sandwich.

There are also baked goods and food vendors at the Tuesday market. Many of the neighborhood's restaurants and businesses are also open, including Supino. The popular pizzeria, an Eastern Market favorite, recently reopened for dine-in service after renovations following a second-floor fire.

Lastly, while at Tuesday's market, I hit a great bargain on hanging flower baskets.

Two market vendors had a selection of regular and New Guinea impatiens, along with other flowers. I picked up two hanging New Guinea impatiens baskets and two others with beautiful purple flowers that the vendor explained attracted hummingbirds.

    The price? $5 each! I couldn't resist.

    Have a great week!
