    Many Duggan officials don't live in Detroit; Kamala Harris drums up support; more

    Mayor Mike Duggan has spent just about a decade writing Detroit's narrative as a comeback city and boasting of its growing population. But 45% of his high-ranking staff don't call the city home.

    A Free Press analysis found that this isn't a new phenomenon — records show that the statistic was about the same in 2020. Some of the most far-flung examples, Dave Boucher reports :

    • Duggan's own deputy mayor lives in Farmington Hills.
    • The city's assessor and deputy chief financial officer lives in a Lansing suburb around 100 miles from the city.
    • And Detroit's interim director of transit listed Romeoville, Ill. — a suburb of Chicago — as his place of residence on his 2023 disclosure. That's nearly 300 miles away.

    While this isn't technically against the rules — a 1999 Michigan state law largely banned such requirements for employees and appointed bureaucrats — some say it undermines the mayor's narrative. A spokesperson for Duggan defended the officials, saying that the need for talent trumps a person's place of residence.
