Lions Trade For Giants’ Wide Receiver In Intriguing Proposal

The Detroit Lions and New York Giants are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to NFC Power rankings. The Lions are legitimate contenders and could represent the conference in the Super Bowl.

The Giants are in a bit of a rebuild. Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll found a ton of success in Year 1, but things came crashing back to Earth in Year 2 and adjustments were needed.

Ahead of the 2024 season, could the teams come together on a trade that will aid both sides? Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network has pitched an intriguing trade idea between the franchises.

In the proposed deal, New York would send wide receiver Darius Slayton to Detroit. In return, they would receive a 2025 sixth-round pick.

“It’s almost baffling that Detroit didn’t add a receiver in free agency or the draft, especially after losing Josh Reynolds, who played the second-most snaps among Lions WRs in 2023.

The Lions have plenty of weapons in RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, and TE Sam LaPorta, but the club is counting on a Jameson Williams breakout.

Darius Slayton would be an upgrade over Kalif Raymond at Detroit’s other outside WR spot.

He’s spent most of his career on the perimeter, which would allow St. Brown to stay in the slot in 11 personnel. He’s hardly a star, but Slayton has posted 700 receiving yards in four of his five NFL seasons,” Robinson wrote.

Earlier this offseason, Slayton was seeking a new contract from the Giants. While an extension wasn’t worked out, they did rework his deal so that he has some incentives to earn.

Alas, it is hard to imagine that Slayton is in the team’s long-term plans. He has been their most productive wide receiver since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

But, New York isn’t going to pay him long-term. Malik Nabers, Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt are the wide receivers of the future for the Giants.

As a result, the Lions could land a steady receiver at a discounted price. As Robinson noted, they didn’t add a replacement for Josh Reynolds; they are banking on an improvement from Jameson Williams.

Slayton has led the Giants in receiving in four out of five seasons, surpassing the 700-yard mark four times. He would provide another deep threat for the offense and someone with a little more reliability opposite Amon-Ra St. Brown in case Williams does not come through.
