Future of Health: Detroit Announces Partners to Manage Home Repair, Rental Funding Sleeve

The Future of Health: Detroit development partners — Henry Ford Health, Tom Gores and the Detroit Pistons, and Michigan State University — identified today two nonprofit organizations that will administer a $2.5 million sleeve of funding dedicated to home repair and rental assistance for neighboring residents of the new Future of Health development anchored by a new hospital, residential, commercial, and related facilities.

The funds are part of an estimated $604 million in community benefits associated with the development plan.

Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corp. will receive and administer $2 million in connection with the home repair funding benefits, distributed over five years. Black Family Development Inc. will receive $500,000 distributed over five years as a part of the rental assistance funding benefits.

The funding will coincide with commencement of construction for the initial residential project, scheduled for 2025. The development team, in collaboration with its newly selected nonprofit partners, will coordinate efforts to establish and publicly message programs and mechanisms for distributing funds to eligible homeowners and renters in the impact area.

The selections were made by the Future of Health Development team after research and consultation with the Neighborhood Advisory Council and the City of Detroit Housing and Revitalization Department.

Henry Ford Health, Tom Gores and the Detroit Pistons, and MSU announced the Future of Health partnership in February 2023. It represents a community development and investment of $3 billion over the next decade aiming to positively transform Detroit’s New Center neighborhood into a vibrant, walkable community with state-of-the-art health care, residential, commercial, retail and recreational components.

The development will be anchored by a major expansion of Henry Ford Hospital that features a new more than 1 million-square-foot facility and patient tower. It also includes a new, cutting-edge medical research facility for Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences, part of the two organizations’ 30-year landmark partnership.

Gordie Howe International Bridge Deck Connected

Texas-based Fluor Corp. and its partners Wednesday celebrated the deck connection of the Gordie Howe International Bridge spanning the Detroit River. Measuring a half-mile, the bridge connects Windsor, Ontario and Detroit. It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America and 10th longest in the world. The bridge also has the distinction of being the longest composite steel and concrete decked cable-stayed bridge in the world.

Bridging North America (BNA), a joint venture between Fluor, ACS Infrastructure Canada, and Aecon Group Inc., are building the bridge for Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA).

Construction began in 2018 from both sides of the river and culminated with an intricate, four-week, multi-step, precision process that included the placement and removal of temporary bents, and the installation of the final steel girders, beams, panels, and precast concrete.

“The team has worked incredibly hard since 2018 to achieve this important project milestone,” says Shawn West, president of the Fluor infrastructure business. “The connection of this iconic bridge serves as a testament to our dedication and perseverance to build safe and reliable infrastructure. This bridge will soon serve as a major gateway between Canada and the United States.”

While the main focus of construction has been on the bridge deck, progress also is being made on the ports of entry in Canada and the United States, as well as the connection to I-75.

When completed, the bridge will include six lanes of traffic, two ports of entry, a multi-use path, a new interchange at I-75 with four new road bridges, five pedestrian bridges, and four interchange ramps connecting I-75 to the U.S. Port of Entry.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is scheduled to open in the fall of 2025.

Upon completion, Fluor and ACS will operate and maintain the facility for 30 years for the WDBA.
