Last Thursday marked 50 years since the Supreme Court decided Milliken v. Bradley , which limited forced desegregation efforts and emphasized local control of schools. It was a setback to desegregation in Detroit, and it still impacts the demographics of the city and its suburbs, half a century later.

The phenomenon of white flight — where white families fled inner-ring suburbs as Black families moved in — is apparent in the history of suburban school districts, Lily Altavena reports . The data shows that a number of school districts, including the Detroit Public Schools Community District, continue to be divided — sometimes even more than they were in 1975. Inequitable school funding still persists between metro Detroit school districts, and education advocates say that higher-income areas continue to have more resources to devote towards a quality education.

The specter of Michigan's racist past still lingers today, in other ways. A white supremacist rally in Howell on July 20 calls to mind an unsightly aspect of the state's history — the one-time grand dragon of Michigan's Ku Klux Klan operated in and around Howell for decades, Neil Rubin writes .
