    Corktown wants to keep its bricks

    As someone who came to Detroit this summer without a car, I've been exploring the city by bike lately. Although the bricks on Michigan Avenue in Corktown are not the smoothest bike ride in the world, I really appreciate the unique character they add to the roads. So do the people leading the "Save the Bricks!" campaign in the historic neighborhood .

    Critics of the Michigan Department of Transportation's plan to redo Michigan Avenue say the project is not only impractical and has multiple logistical concerns, they're also worried about removing the iconic bricks. Work on the road could start as early as next spring, and fans of the bricks are gathering signatures for a petition to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and others.
