Lions’ latest move shows Dan Campbell will always treat his players better than he was treated as a player

Having a former player be a head coach just brings a whole different aspect to things that coaches with no NFL playing experience can't understand. One of things is knowing what it's like to be a player that's looking for a new contract.

To some it might look like someone who is rich is just trying to get richer, but that's not what's happening here all the time. More often than not it's about security. It's about knowing where your kids are going to school next year or where you and your family are going to live. It's about knowing that you can stay with your brothers on the team and continue to have the life that you're having right now.

Detroit Lions' head coach Dan Campbell can understand that, that's why it was refreshing to learn that he has an open door policy for players that want to talk about contracts with him and that he's going to be totally honest. He's not going to lie to his players like someone lied to him when he was playing.

"I've told those guys from day one, man, if something like that is bothering you, you can always, as you know Brad and myself, you come talk to us, and we will tell you what our mindset is, where we're at, what we're thinking. We're not going to shy away from that. So we've told everybody that... You got something on your mind, come up and talk. We can talk one on one, and I'll give you the straight up, man, I remember what it was like as a player, and I was lied to at one point, and I will never do that to a player. So even if it is going to hurt a little bit, I want them to know the truth."

This open door policy has already been put in action this offseason when starting left tackle Taylor Decker went up to Campbell to talk about an extension during OTAs. Campbell essentially told Decker that he was next, but with him coming off surgery, they wanted to see him get out there and make sure he's good.

On Monday we saw that he's good to go when the Lions sign him to a three-year $60 million extension that will likely have Decker retiring as a Lion.

Stuff like this matters and the Lions' coaching staff and front office continue to knock it out of the park on the culture end of things.
