Detroit Lions' Dan Campbell offers grim injury updates on two players

The Detroit Lions are going to be without two players for a long time after both were injured during the second padded practice of training camp on Tuesday.

According to head coach Dan Campbell on Wednesday morning, defensive end John Cominsky and offensive lineman Netane Muti both suffered significant injuries that will require surgery.

We already knew about Cominsky, who has reportedly suffered a torn MCL and will be out until the playoffs, at least. Muti exited Tuesday's practice early with a shoulder injury, per Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com , but his exact injury is unknown.

“Both of them have injuries that will knock them out for a while,” Campbell said of Muti and Cominsky on Wednesday. “Both will need surgery.”

While it remains to be seen what the approach will be for Muti, Campbell did say the team is considering not placing Cominsky on injured reserve because of the possibility they can get him back later in 2024.

A former fourth-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons, Cominsky has been with the Lions for two seasons, tallying six sacks in that span. Earlier this offseason, Cominsky took a pay cut to stay in Detroit. He was primed to grab a depth role ahead of his third season in Motown.

Muti entered the league as a sixth-round pick of the Denver Broncos, spending three seasons there. He was with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023 and was signed to a futures deal by the Lions in February. His spot on the roster was much more up in the air than Cominsky's.
