The Lions could be going through their own Jordan Love type contract situation soon

The Green Bay Packers shocked everyone last week when they signed Jordan Love to an extension that made him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL after just one season of play. It made sense to sign him to an extension, but one that big after just one season of starting seems crazy.

The Detroit Lions might soon be doing something similar with Jameson Williams. He won't become the highest paid receiver in the game, but if he has a very good breakout season as one of the Lions new starters, they're more than likely going to sign him to a lucrative contract.

So what does a big year look like? For Williams to get the big deal, he's going to have to go off and have a season like 49ers' receiver Brandon Aiyuk broke out with in 2022. 78 receptions for 1,015 yards and eight touchdowns will get Williams paid big.

We did out own projections at the start of July and we have Williams doing less than that, but still having a stellar breakout year. We projected he'd have 65 receptions for 775 yards and six touchdowns. That's not a bad season at all. Considering he's just getting into the groove of being a starter, that's really good.

A season like that might put the Lions in a place where they could pick up Williams' fifth year option and take another year to see if Williams can replicate or pass that production up.

Although now that we've seen him at camp, he looks like a guy that's ready to be pushing more towards that Aiyuk type season where he's going to get paid big.

Don't expect Williams to get a deal that makes him the highest paid receiver unless he goes thermonuclear and puts up record like numbers, but the contract could be big.

The best example for what Williams could get paid is the Devonta Smith extension the Eagles signed him to this offseason. A three year $75 million extension. That might seem big now, but this is the way the market is headed and once Aiyuk, Lamb and Higgins get their big deals, Williams' deal would look pretty small. Kind of like it does for Smith after the St. Brown, Jefferson and Brown deals.

So yeah, there's a good chance that the Lions are about to pull their own Jordan Love situation and pay a guy big after one good season. We'll see what happens.
