Sione Vaki was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round with the 132nd overall pick. Vaki has an incredibly interesting profile since he played both sides of the ball at Utah. Primarily playing safety, Vaki showed that he could also play Running Back. In 2023, Vaki got 42 carries for 317 yards (7.5 yards per reception) and two touchdowns, in addition to 11 receptions for 203 yards (18.5 yards per reception) and 3 touchdowns.
Vaki had an average of 9.8 yards per touch which can be ridiculous if it translates into the NFL. He will still be behind Gibbs and Monty for touches, but if one of them goes down, he could have value in those specific weeks since the Lions have an elite offensive line and utilize their backs heavily. Vaki is a taxi squad lottery ticket, if he can take over that ground and pound role (6’0 208 pounds) that they use Monty for he will be such a value pick as a waiver wire add.
Vaki suffered a shoulder injury at camp last week but said that he should be fine; just keep that in mind for the short term.
Our consensus projections for Vaki in the 2024 season are 22 carries for 139 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. As well as 1 reception, 7 yards, and 0 touchdowns.
