Metro Detroit forecast through Wednesday: Showers, winds, and then the sun will come out

Scattered thunderstorms are forecast for Monday afternoon throughout southeast Michigan as a cold front moves into the area.

The good news about that: Some cooling off. The temperatures are expected to go from the mid-80s down into the 70s, and stay there through Thursday, when highs will be in the low 80s again.

Initially, the National Weather Service thought the storms could be severe, possibly spawning large hail, damaging winds and even tornadoes. But just before noon, the weather service revised its predictions, suggesting instead that the showers would be milder, with a threat of localized flooding.

"Some showers and embedded thunderstorms are approaching metro Detroit as we speak," said meteorologist Megan Varcie in the agency's White Lake Township office. "They are expected to linger through the afternoon but are weakening as they move into the area."

Last week, the scattered showers were a daily pattern. But this week, the rain is expected to last just two days.

Monday, there also could be some small hail and gusty winds of 30-40 mph, which is enough, perhaps, to knock down trees and take out powerlines, but the severe weather threat is not as high, now, as what the forecasters were anticipating.

Varcie added that there could be more overnight and early morning showers that still over the area and dump a couple inches of rain or more, which could lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas. But by Wednesday, the rain should stop and the sun is expected to come out again.
