New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had to be removed from a brawl after a joint practice with the Detroit Lions turned physical.

Tensions were high on Monday morning as a fight broke out following an altercation between Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St Brown and Giants cornerback Andru Phillips. This was shortly followed by another scrum after Jones had the ball smacked out of his hands, and this time the Giants quarterback was involved.

According to SNY, Jones was pulled out by a coach as the safety of the quarterback was prioritized. It was just nine months ago that Jones suffered a season-ending injury against the Las Vegas Raiders after he tore his ACL.

Jones spoke out about the brawl after practice and confirmed he was defending his teammates, although he attempted to defuse the situation. "I mean, situation happens like that, you try to stand up for your guys but I thought it was a good competitive practice all day today," Jones said, per FOX Sports.

"We made some plays and did some good things, there's some things we need to [shore] up for sure. But good intensity and competitive spirit there."

Fights aren't uncommon in training camp, especially when teams combine to stage a more competitive atmosphere. However, they often disrupt the entire scheduled training session and the Giants cannot afford to waste time after a woeful 2023 season.

Jones is facing pressure to stay healthy and show that the 2023 season was a blip, with head coach Brian Daboll also at risk if the upcoming season doesn't result in a vast improvement. "I think that's the goal every day you come out to practice, whether you're practicing against another team or yourself is to feel better and more confident at the end of the day," Jones said on Monday.

"I think we did that, I think we made some plays, executed well throughout the day. Like I said, there's some things we want back and things we could do better for sure but overall I thought we played tough, played physical, and executed well."

Jones' involvement showed passion and fight, something that the Giants will need next season. Edge rusher Brian Burns complimented Jones after practice but admitted that the last thing the Giants need is for him to be placed at risk.

"Oh lord … Daniel got jiggy with it?" Burns said after Monday's practice. "Daniel was out there with it? Yeah! I'm [going to] need him to back up. I'm [going to] need him to back up, let his O-line handle that. But yeah, nah Daniel, he's a competitor man, he's a fighter. I don't expect anything less from him, but I don't need him in that, I don't need him to get hit, keep him healthy."
