Stanley fire doubles in size over the weekend; Cow Valley fire in eastern Oregon at 130,000 acres
If it's not already clear from the smoke in the air, wildfire season has begun. Over the weekend several wildfires, including one in Stanley, have grown significantly in size. The Bench Lake fire, in Stanley and the Sawtooth National Forest, started on July 11 around noon and although Idaho saw cooler temperatures on Sunday, the Bench Lake fire doubled in size over the weekend.

EWEB announces near-record high electricity demand during heat wave
EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene Water and Electric Board said the demand for electricity during this recent heat wave was the second-highest on record during the summer. Electricity demand peaked at 418 megawatts on July 9, just shy of a 423 megawatt record set back in 2006. Aaron Orlowski, an EWEB spokesperson, said the utility did not run into any issues during the heat wave. He said a large reason why is the hydropower resources EWEB has at its disposal.

A 26-year-old man died Thursday night in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 221, Oregon State Police said Monday. A preliminary investigation of the 9:53 p.m. crash found Zakary Ross Nasby of Newberg was northbound on Wallace Road NW in a Ford Ranger pickup truck when he drove onto the shoulder before overcorrecting back across the roadway, leaving the roadway and colliding with a tree, OSP said in a news release.

No injuries after fire in west Eugene bedroom, firefighters say
EUGENE, Ore. – A house is damaged but no one is injured after a fire on Sunday evening that scorched a bedroom in west Eugene, firefighters said. Eugene Springfield Fire said firefighters were called to a reported house fire on west Second Avenue near Chambers Street in Eugene at 7:10 p.m. on July 14. According to ESF, callers told them that five occupants of the home had safely escaped the home with their pets before fire crews got on their way to the location. Firefighters arrived to find smoke billowing from the home.

EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Police Violent Crimes Unit is investigating a homicide that occurred late at night on July 13 in the 300 block of E. 14th Avenue. Police responded to the scene around 10:49 p.m. on Saturday, with a heavy patrol presence. The Violent Crimes Unit and the Forensic Evidence Unit also responded for an investigation, which is ongoing and in the early stages, authorities said.
1 killed in fiery 3-vehicle crash in Hillsboro
HILLSBORO, Ore. (KPTV) - One person was killed and two others were hurt in a crash in Hillsboro late Sunday night. Just before 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a crash involving three vehicles at the intersection of East Main Street and Northeast Cornelius Pass Road. Officers arrived to the scene and found one of the vehicles on fire. The two other vehicles were damaged, one extensively.
