Michigan set to become 20th state outlawing ‘gay panic’ defense
LANSING, MI – It would no longer be legal to argue that someone’s sexual orientation justified assaulting them under a proposed law headed to the governor’s desk. If signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a person charged with a violent crime couldn’t seek to reduce or evade criminal liability on claims that they lost control and reacted violently because of the victim’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
Wayne County man honored as Distinguished Alumnus from Northern Michigan University
A retired Allen Park Police Detective who still lives in Wayne County, was honored as one of six Distinguished Alumni from Northern Michigan University for 2024. Jim Thorburn, who spent 27.5 years with the Allen Park Police Department, before starting a consulting firm to teach other public information officers how to best deal with the media, is the only local honoree this year.

Shooting leaves 1 person dead on Detroit's west side
DETROIT (FOX 2) - One person was killed in a shooting on the Southfield Freeway Service Drive between St. Martin and Pembroke avenues in Detroit, according to police. The shooting took place on Thursday, before 4 p.m. The victim was pronounced dead at an area hospital, according to Detroit police. No suspects are in custody at this time.
Almont firefighter walks to benefit first responders with cancer
Lapeer County has had three recipients of #WalkfortheRED thus far, and an additional five more will be helped this year. This is information that Rick Ziehm, a senior firefighter in Almont who has served for 22 years, would like the community to be aware of as he prepares to participate in the 140 mile walk. The event hosted by Neighbors United, will take place over a four day period on September 5 through September 8, to raise money for firefighters currently serving or retired who are suffering from cancer. Additionally, funds also go to the families of those who have served and who have passed away, to help assist with funeral costs and other expenses.
Edgewood Country Club hosting 34th GAM Net Team qualifying day
COMMERCE TWP. – Edgewood Country Club’s classic golf course will host the first day of the 34th GAM Net Team Championship presented by Michigan Golf Live on Monday. A field of 80 teams, or 160 golfers, including combinations of men, women and some family duos, will play 18 holes with net four-ball scoring.
