Hull, Massachusetts is getting ready to celebrate its 15th Harbor Illumination event on Saturday, July 20th! This annual event that lights up the harbor a brilliant shade of red has a rich history dating back to the 1880s.

The Hull Lifesaving Museum has shared some interesting historical facts about Hull's Annual Harbor Illumination event on social media. According to the museum, the event has an interesting history, dating back to the 1880s when hotels dotted the shore and fire-lit torches stretched first to Hingham and ultimately as far as Quincy. The tradition of lighting the edge of the harbor was born, but the practice died out by the 1930s with the end of the hotel era. It briefly reappeared in the 1980s before making a comeback in 2008.

According to the Hull Lifesaving Museum, anyone can participate in the event by purchasing flares, which are available for $10 each on their website. The museum also sells Forever Flares, which for $300 are lit every year in perpetuity. The flares will be positioned and lit by an event team member and every dollar from the flare sales will support the museum's mission and programming. The Hull Lifesaving Museum has shared how excited they are to continue this longstanding tradition and bring the community together for a memorable experience steeped in history and tradition.

The day itself will involve multiple events leading up to the harbor illumination.
