DICKINSON, ND ( KXNET ) — Dickinson State University and Mayville State University have worked out a collaborative agreement to support the nursing program at DSU. The partnership involves sharing nursing administration to ensure the continuation of DSU’s nursing programs.

Questions about the viability and future of the nursing program at Dickinson State have been up in the air since July 15, when DSU President Steve Easton resigned, along with DSU nursing administration and faculty.

Since Monday, numerous meetings and discussions have been held, many focusing on the fate of students already enrolled in DSU’s nursing program and accreditation for the program.

That all led to Friday’s joint announcement from Dickinson State and Mayville State.

“In response to the urgent situation currently facing DSU’s nursing program, MSU has committed to providing shared nurse administrators to support DSU’s efforts in maintaining its nursing accreditation,” the statement from the universities notes. “This collaboration will allow DSU students to continue their education in accredited programs, ensuring their progress and future success.”

Mayville State currently operates two fully online nursing programs: A post-licensure Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing program.

Dickinson State offers two licensure-based programs: An associate in applied science for practical nursing (LPN) and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Because the programs are distinct from each other at both universities, the programs are seen as non-competitive and “mutually beneficial.”

The agreement between DSU and MSU takes effect Monday, July 22, 2024 and runs until May 20, 2025.

DSU Vice President Holly Gruhlke was optimistic about the relationship: “We are grateful for MSU’s continued collaboration. Anytime we can work together for our students, we are stronger together. This is what a system is truly all about,” Gruhlke said.

MSU Vice President for Academic Affair Brian Huschle also shared his enthusiasm: “Our joint effort with DSU represents a significant step in ensuring that nursing education in North Dakota remains robust and responsive to the needs of our students and the healthcare sector. We are confident that this partnership will yield positive outcomes for both institutions and the communities we serve,” Huschle said.
