DICKINSON N.D.– After an illustrious athletics career with the Dickinson Midgets, Ava Jahner has committed to Dickinson State University. Jahner will get to stay home and play on the same softball field in college that she competed on in her high school career.

The Dickinson State Blue Hawks are getting a star in Jahner. Jahner won senior athlete of the year at Dickinson, she also participated in both the Optimist All-Star Volleyball Game and the Scheels All-Star softball game, and after searching far and wide for the right university for her, she wound up right back home in Dickinson.

“I never really thought I was going to stay close to home, but, you know, everything just seemed to line up perfectly. You know, getting to play two sports and getting to be around the people that I know and that I love, it’s great,” Jahner said. “Honestly, I don’t think many people expected me to stay here, especially not my parents because they always thought I was going to move away. So, I think it was a shock for most people that I stayed in Dickinson.”

Jahner will play volleyball and softball at Dickinson State University. She racked up over 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills in her volleyball career at Dickinson High School, while also leading her team to a second consecutive state championship this year in softball.

“So I met with coach Fleury first, and I pretty much knew that I wanted to play softball no matter what you know. My heart was in it so I’m like, I’m playing no matter what. And then I met with the volleyball coach after that and it seemed like a really good fit,” Jahner said. “That was my first time ever meeting her, I had been around coach Fleury for my whole life since I was really little. So getting to meet that volleyball coach, I just think we had a really good connection, so I was like ‘hmm why not, let’s try it out and see what happens’.”
