Today in history: House falls in cellar excavation
A team of horses and several men narrowly escaped death or serious injury Tuesday when the house at 414 Howard St. fell into a new basement which is being excavated for the building. The house, which is in charge of James Bothwell, was raised on jackscrews to allow a wall to be placed and the cellar dug out with horse-drawn scoops. The workmen had the house elevated two or three feet and had just driven the team from beneath the structure when the rear end collapsed, driving the jacks into the soft sand which furnished an insecure foundation. The main upright of the house was torn loose from a wing and the roof was pushed upward when the house tumbled. The damage was nearly repaired today and the work of digging the basement will proceed with precautions against a recurrence of the collapse.
