Onekama Block Party to be held July 11
ONEKAMA — The Onekama Block Party will be held from 4-8:30 p.m. on July 11 along Main Street from MacBeth & Co. to the village park. Today in history: Woman moonshiner caught by sheriff
The early bird gets the worm. The sheriff in this case was the early bird and he not only got the worm but the other parts of the still and besides captured a woman moonshiner, Mrs. Jay Powers, 50, of White Sands and Hoxieville. Sheriff Nixon was forced to make a very early morning drive today to serve a legal paper. He started from home at 4 a.m. with Mrs. Nixon and when near Hoxieville he saw Mrs. Powers with a suspicious load. The sheriff stopped the woman and found four and a half gallons of sub-deb moonshine, so called because it was so young that it had not yet made its first appearance in society, having been made the woman confessed, only yesterday. Mrs. Powers took the sheriff back to her White Sands farm where he found the still and other evidences of the local talent hooch manufacture. Mrs. Powers was arraigned in Recorder’s Court today and bound over to Circuit Court in the sum of $500, which late today had not been furnished.

CADILLAC — A Paw Paw-based winery and distillery is interested in purchasing Burke’s Waterfront Restaurant and turning it into a tasting room. The management of St. Julian have asked for the Cadillac City Council’s blessing in applying for an on-premises tasting room permit from the state of Michigan.
Silent Observer unveils tool to help find area's 'Most Wanted'
LAKE CITY — The Cadillac Area Silent Observer has a new tool in its arsenal to help find people on its “Most Wanted” list. The silent observer program unveiled its new mobile trailer outside of the Missaukee County Sheriff’s Department in Lake City Thursday. The trailer has a 3-foot by 6-foot sign attached to it and security cameras.
Two receive minor injuries in highway crash
AMBER TOWNSHIP — Two people received minor injuries Thursday, July 11, following a two vehicle crash about 1:40 p.m. at US 10 and US 31 (bypass) just west of Scottville city limits. Injured were two women, ages 43 and 75, both of Scottville. Both were in the same vehicle which collided with a vehicle that had attempted to make a left turn, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. Emergency units responding to the scene included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Scottville Fire Department, and Life EMS. Custer Fire Department’s extrication unit was dispatched but cancelled en-route.

FRANKFORT, Mich. — The Nature Conservancy and the Point Betsie Lighthouse are teaming up to host a volunteer event on Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Zetterberg Preserve at Point Betsie. Attendees will partner up with members of TNC’s restoration team to pull spotted knapweed, an invasive plant that can displace native plants and degrade wildlife habitat.
