Respect right to place yard signs
To the vandals who stole the signs from my yard, shame on you. While I may not share your politics I do respect your property and your rights. I guess you cannot expect as much from someone who backs a convicted felon, whom his cronies have given carte blanche to do as he pleases. I still believe no one is above the law.
St Ann Catholic Church celebrates 100th anniversary
BALDWIN — St. Ann Catholic Church is observing its 100th birthday this year. Although a few churches predated St. Ann’s by a few decades in early settlement of the Baldwin community, as more people emigrated throughout the early 1900s, they brought their Catholic faith with them. Along with...
NMD's 'Diesel Day' sees numbers increase
KALEVA — The 2nd Annual Diesel Day took place Saturday at Northern Michigan Dragway. The event saw a nice increase in numbers, and had several faster semis in competition than last season’s inaugural event, sponsored by Alumaclear. Jeff O’Rourke of Vanderbilt had the quickest 1/8th-mile elapsed time. His...
Biden fighting for the eople
Despite Congress preventing President Biden from passing legislation to help the American people, Biden has still accomplished much through federal agencies just this year alone. The Biden Administration banned noncompete agreements for most U.S. workers. Most salaried workers became eligible for overtime pay. Net neutrality to keep our internet from corporate control was reinstated (after Trump reversed it). Airlines must automatically refund passengers of canceled airline flights. Obama banned Chlorpyrifos, a dangerous neurotoxic pesticide sprayed on our crops; Trump lifted the ban; Biden reinstated the ban. The Biden Administration has cracked down on junk fees such as capping credit card fees. The Biden Administration banned medical debt from showing up on credit reports. This is what it looks like when the government works on behalf of the people.
Complicated life
Life is complicated. To navigate through it, we all employ models that help make sense of it all. I often use my role as a sports official. Unlike all other participants in the game, the official alone has the responsibility to render a decision and live with it. I have great respect for those who live with the burden of responsibility. It can get heavy. Officials also must decide when life catches up and decisiveness declines. It can be like a frog in hot water though. Coming to that conclusion is a process over time, if we are lucky.

Freedom Festival drone show
I appreciate the efforts of all the volunteers who contribute to Cadillac events, including the recent Freedom Festival. It was good of local businesses to contribute to the Friday night drone show. Unfortunately the event needed a little better planning. First, it was not well advertised. The newspaper article gave no information as to the time and exact location of the event. A Google search gave the time as 9:30 p.m., but the actual time was after 10 p.m. Most people seem to have assumed that the event could be best seen at the park pavilion, but it could not be seen at all from there, since it was staged near the boat dock by the Chamber of Commerce building. Many left early because they couldn’t see anything. Better planning, please.

Cadillac Freedom Fest ends with a bang
CADILLAC — While the Cadillac Freedom Festival technically ended on Sunday with a Church in the Park service at the pavilion, for many, the annual Independence Day celebration climaxed on Saturday with fireworks over the lake. People from around the area set up chairs at the edge of Lake...
Baldwin man unearthing history of logging railroads
LAKE COUNTY — Imagine a time when Lake County was filled with vast virgin forests with sounds of scurrying wildlife, screeching wildcats and howling wolves echoing over the hills; mingling with the clamor of shovels scooping dirt and hammers ringing a different tone — one of man conquering these mighty forestlands with tracks being laid in every direction to retrieve the “wooden gold” of towering pines during the logging boom.
