Today in history: New fixtures for two ward schools
Contracts were awarded Tuesday night by the Board of Education for new fixtures and wiring in two of the public schools in the city, the Cass and Franklin. The Leslie-Johnson Co. was awarded the contract of wiring the Cass school for $510 and the Thompson Electric Co. was given the job of wiring the Franklin school for $964.48. The Thompson Co. also got the job of furnishing the fixtures for the Cass school for $538.90 and the United Appliance Co. will furnish the fixtures for the Franklin school for $555. Supt. C.W. Crandell made his annual report to the board in which he summarizes the activities of the schools for the past year and made some recommendations for the coming term. Seven new applicants will be tendered contracts to teach in the Cadillac schools on the recommendation of the teachers committee: Ellen Chatterton of Ypsilanti; Ethel Ryckman of Cleveland; Gertrude Lord of Detroit; Helen Allen of Ann Arbor; Ella Soderberg of Iron Mountain; Agnes Burgeson of Ishpeming and Helen Johnson of Cadillac.

Interlochen man dies after van smashes through guardrail, lands in river
MESICK — A fatal crash closed eastbound and westbound M-115 between Hodenpyl Dam Road and M-37 in Wexford County. According to a press release from the Wexford County Sheriff’s Department, at about 3:28 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, deputies were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of W. M-115 and Simmons Street at the Manistee River in Springville Township.

CADILLAC — For 12 years, Emily Thompson has been working with local teens through the Cadillac Wexford Public Library. According to a Middle School Journal article, having spaces for a community's youth creates a “safer and enhanced community, reinforce and support the cultural identities of all youth, and serve to become the vanguard of teachers’ planning, strategies, and classroom work.”
