Old Free Soil school to be razed
FREE SOIL — Demolition has begun on the old Free Soil school complex, located on North Democrat Street. Village President Dave Morley said Bob Peters is doing the demolition work. Morley said Peters has started with removing all interior items with the expectation for the former high school and elementary complexes to be razed in July.

Fishing report shows local conditions, best methods
The Department of Natural Resources’ weekly fishing report for June 26 shows some of the most current conditions in Manistee, Mason and Benzie counties. In Manistee, the report for Lake Michigan says anglers are mainly seeing a mix of Chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead and lake trout along the shelf at various depths.

A raspy and sometimes halting President Joe Biden tried repeatedly to confront Donald Trump in their first debate ahead of the November election, as his Republican rival countered Biden’s criticism by leaning into falsehoods about the economy, illegal immigration and his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.
Zion Lutheran celebrates 150 years
CADILLAC — Cadillac officially became a city in 1877. But three years before that, the Zion Lutheran congregation was formed with 13 members. Back then, missionaries traveled from lumber camp to lumber camp. In May 1874, the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church came into existence, home to immigrants from Sweden working in the timber business.
