In most cases, if a pair of Bear Lake High School alums get together for a cup of coffee, it is not likely to be considered a particularly remarkable occurrence. When the alumni in question attended the school in the 1960s as foreign exchange students hailing from Scandinavia and had never met before, things start to get interesting.

MANISTEE — A Democratic candidate for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat which has been held by the retiring Debbie Stabenow since 2001 visited Manistee Monday. Hill Harper spoke at the Art Park on the east end of River Street for about 30 minutes in front of a crowd of more than 20 before heading to Benzie County, Cadillac and Brighton as part of his campaign trail.

American Legion to host summer barbecue
MANISTEE — The American Legion Post 10 of Manistee will host a community-wide barbecue this summer. On Aug. 3, the legion will host the BBQ for the Community from noon to 6 p.m. Food will be served from 1-4 p.m., and live music, a silent auction and family games will be offered throughout the afternoon. Fire destroys Meade Township house
MEADE TOWNSHIP — Fire destroyed a house at 5261 E. Hasenbank Rd. late Sunday evening. Firefighters were dispatched to the residence at 11:28 p.m. Free Soil/Meade Fire Department Chief Vince Williams said the homeowner, Michael Pickard, was not home when the fire began. He said Pickard came home to discover the house engulfed in flames.
