An outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farm in Wisconsin has affected 65 people from nine states. The CDC is investigating, with 24 patients hospitalized. The outbreak strain of Salmonella matches samples from the farm, leading to a recall of eggs under the Milo's and Tony's Fresh Market brands. Illness clusters have been identified at restaurants supplied with Milo’s eggs.

The FDA found the outbreak strain in the farm's packing facility and laying house. The outbreak began in May and continues, with more cases expected due to underreporting. The CDC notes that many cases go unreported or undiagnosed in Salmonella outbreaks, with up to 22 undetected cases for every confirmed one. The FDA is ongoing with its investigation at the farm to prevent further illnesses and ensure public safety.

The collaboration between the CDC and FDA is crucial in swiftly addressing the Salmonella outbreak originating from Milo's Poultry Farm. The identification of the outbreak strain in both the packing facility and laying house underscores the need for thorough investigations to pinpoint the exact source of contamination and prevent future incidents. With the recall in place for eggs under specific brands and the clusters of illnesses linked to restaurants supplied by Milo's, public health measures are being prioritized to contain the spread of infection.

Efforts to raise awareness about the underreporting of Salmonella cases are essential for a more accurate understanding of the outbreak's scope. The proactive stance taken by the FDA in continuing its investigation at the farm demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding public health. As the outbreak evolves, the collaboration and swift actions of health agencies are vital in mitigating the impact on individuals and communities while also implementing measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
