The FDA has categorized packaged golden raisins as a high-risk product due to a recent recall over undeclared ingredients, potentially posing "life-threatening" risks for those with allergies. New Jersey-based Sunco & Frenchie LLC recalled two batches of their 10oz Terrafina Golden Raisins distributed in New York stores for containing undisclosed sulfites.

The recall, prompted by routine sampling, revealed the presence of sulfite not listed on labels. These raisins have the UPC number 847938001385 and "Best If Used By" dates of "05/2025" or "08/2025," with lot numbers GRA240602 and GDR240901. Although sulfites are common preservatives, they can trigger severe reactions in allergic individuals, such as asthma attacks and anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition, requires immediate treatment with epinephrine to counter its effects on breathing and blood pressure. Despite no reported illnesses linked to the recalled raisins, consumers are advised not to consume them and to return them for a refund as per the FDA directive. Consumers are being urged to check their pantry shelves for the specific UPC numbers and "Best If Used By" dates mentioned in the recall notice to ensure their safety. It's crucial for individuals with sulfite allergies or sensitivities to be vigilant about reading product labels and staying informed about potential allergen risks. This incident underscores the importance of thorough food labeling and the necessity for companies to accurately disclose all ingredients to prevent such health hazards and protect consumers' well-being.

The FDA's swift action in issuing this recall serves as a reminder of the agency's commitment to upholding food safety standards and protecting public health. It also highlights the significance of routine product sampling and testing in identifying potential risks before they escalate into widespread health concerns. By heeding the FDA directive and returning the recalled golden raisins, consumers can contribute to a safer food supply chain and help prevent allergic reactions that could have severe consequences.
