South Central used a timely hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to get by Windsor/Stew-Stras, 3-2, on Wednesday and earn their spot in the Championship game of the National Trail Conference Baseball Tournament. After a pair of leadoff singles in the bottom of the second put runners at first and second, an RBI single to center field by Maddox Robb brought in the first run of the game for a 1-0 South Central lead. In the top of the fourth inning, WSS got a leadoff walk and a one out single to put runners at second and third. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third before an error on a hard ground ball would allows the Hatchets to bring the runner home from third and tie the game at 1-1. That tie would get broken in the top of the sixth inning as a solo home run to lead off the top of the sixth gave WSS a 2-1 lead. The Cougars were able to get out of the inning allowing just the one run and give themselves a chance to get some offense going in the bottom half of the inning. A strikeout and a fly out to center would have South Central sitting at two outs, but a walk drawn by Colton Smith and a double by Trevan Sidwell to left field would put runners at second and third. Hudson Moore would be intentionally walked to load the bases and Evan Hoover would make the Hatchets pay for the move as he singled to left field and brought in two runs to get the Cougars back on top, 3-2, at the end of the sixth. The Hatchets got a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but two consecutive fielder’s choice outs eliminated the lead runner and a strikeout would end the game. Sidwell got the win on the mound for the Cougars, going the distance. South Central improves to 15-5 on the season and will take on St. Anthony in the Championship game on Saturday at 12:00pm at Beecher City High School.
