The Council : approved the payment of all bills as presented : agreed to spend $66,500 for the City Electric Department to buy nine new relay controllers & materials to install for substation circuit breakers : agreed to spend $30,000 for nine pole mount transformers and $29,000 for two pad mount transformers : approved $12,675 for demolition work at 601 Barton Street : approved $12,352 for demolition work at 503 Stevens Street : approved $12,000 for the demolition of 200 North Goble Street : approved the TIF application for West End Reception & Events worth $5,000 : agreed to authorize the final project for the Energy Transition Community Grant funds for Pickleball Courts at Peterson Park : approved the Appropriations Ordinance for fiscal year 2025 : agreed to vacate the alley running north & south between Lots 5 & 6 and 7 & 8 in Block 13 of the Original Town Subdivision : accepted the resignation from Newton City Policeman Adam Deckard : hired Carson Brown for the Water Department position effective August 19th : approved the Special Event App for the Peoples State Bank “Customer Appreciation Free Ice Cream Day” on August 8th : approved the Special Event Application for the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce Annual Cruise Night on August 9th : and adjourned after a 41-minute closed session to discuss personnel : the Council’s next meeting is August 6th.

THE NEW 2024 MISS RICHLAND COUNTY FAIR QUEEN HAS BEEN CROWNED
(OLNEY) Richland County has a new Fair Queen, as crowned last night by outgoing 2023 Miss Richland County, Holly Duncan, on the fairgrounds in the Olney City Park. It’s 17 year old Aubrey Lambird of Olney, the daughter of Roni Lambird and Mark & Caiti Lambird, all of Olney. Miss Aubrey will now oversee the rest of this year’s County Fair and represent all of Richland County in future events and at the Miss Illinois County Fair Queen Pageant in Springfield in January 2025. Also in the Pageant last night, the First Runner-Up was Chloe Piercefield, Second Runner-Up was Joselyn Kocher, and chosen as Miss Congeniality was Sydney Scherer. A job well done by the Pageant Committee and thanks to all the sponsors.

Champaign-Urbana’s newest restaurant The Burrito Lab opened yesterday on University Avenue in what used to be Meet Fresh. The local burrito shop’s motto is: Life deserves mas guac. I want that kind of life, and so yesterday, I went to check it out. The Burrito Lab offers custom burritos, burrito bowls, walking tacos, quesadillas, and salad — all with unlimited toppings including guacamole.

(NOBLE) With the Annual Noble Chowder nearly three weeks away, on Saturday, August 10th, tickets are now on sale to win the 2024 Noble Chowder Homecoming Quilt, which this year is a queen size Scrappy Irish Chain quilt. On sale at the Noble Village Hall during its normal weekday hours, the tickets are six for $5.00 or $1.00 each.
