Top Revolving Sushi Spot in Los Angeles - Kura Revolving Sushi

    2022-10-14

Kura Sushi is a revolving sushi concept and they currently have over 450 locations across Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. Revolving sushi is where fresh sushi comes out on a conveyor belt and hungry customers eating at the tables can take the type of sushi they want right off of the conveyor belt and onto their table. Each type of sushi that comes out on the conveyor belt typically comes in a set of two, unless it is an especially special or rare type or cut of fish, with a set price per plate. You could also choose specific dishes on the touch screen and the order will be made immediately and “bullet-trained” to your desk via a separate conveyor belt that is much faster. They also offer ramen, udon, curry, and other various sides and desserts to accompany your sushi meal. Currently, they are offering takeout for their sushi but ensuring the same quality of sushi and freshness. Another special feature of their concept is the ability to win cute or fun prizes after you eat a certain number of plates. The idea is to collect as many plates as possible by taking plates off the conveyor belt and eating them. At the end, there is a slot for you to insert your plates, after a certain number of plates, there will be an animation that shows whether you won or not (randomly). Prizes include keychains, stickers, figurines, and more. They usually have a specific anime or Japanese culture related theme.

I’ve been to Kura a couple of times, but my most recent visit has been especially special to me (for takeout). We tried their bluefin toro, shima aji, wagyu, salmon, tuna, tuna toro, salmon toro, shrimp, sweet shrimp, scallop, eel, and snow crab, all of which are nigiri. They also make rolls upon request, but generally everything on the conveyor belt is made in a nigiri style. I also tried their hojicha ice cream as dessert.

Some standouts for me included their bluefin toro, their shima aji, salmon toro, tuna toro, sweet shrimp, and scallop. Their toro, which is a specific cut of fish that is a lot more fatty, rich, and satisfying to bite into, never fails to impress me. It is seriously so soft and tender, and practically melts in your mouth, extremely satisfying to bite into and eat. The flavors are also always on point, never fishy, and super fresh. Toro pieces generally only come in one per plate due to their higher quality and price, but I would say it is so worth it. Their bluefin toro and shima aji are limited time items which are a part of their new program where they add new items in their menu every month, only available for that month, called their Monthly Discovery Items. The shima aji was definitely one of my favorites because of the flavor combination they created which is so rich with savory-ness and umami, truly a wonderful sushi experience. It was super fresh and does not resist at all when bitten into.

I also really enjoyed their sweet shrimp, a lot more than their regular shrimp, because it was super soft and smooth in the mouth. It practically glides into your mouth and melts right as you bite into it. I would say this texture isn’t for everyone, but if you are generally a sushi or fish lover, then this would be a great experience to try out. Their scallop also has a similar satisfying texture and is so soft, almost like butter. The flavor might be off-putting to some, however, so if you’re not comfortable with a wider range of fish and seafood, then this might not be your thing.

Salmon and tuna are classics that will always be good, and it is not any different here. Their fish quality has always been exceptional, and I am never disappointed by the freshness. And at their price point for sushi, you really can’t beat it! The good thing about their conveyor belt concept with small amounts per dish is that you get really high quality nigiri and you don’t need to commit to one type of fish or sushi. Small serving sizes allows you to try many different things that maybe you wouldn’t normally try. Kura is a classic spot that will always have a long line and wait time but will guarantee a very consistent good quality of sushi. I am not sure where the prices land in the general scope of things in terms of price for quality, but Kura is definitely a spot worth stopping by and a classic place that you can always rely on (if you are okay with long wait times that is).
