Starlight Theatre in Kansas City Unveils Bold Transformation Plans in 'Uniquely KC' Campaign

    2023-10-17

Kansas City's iconic Starlight Theatre is set to undergo significant transformations as part of a new capital campaign, with some major changes on the horizon. Among the most notable alterations is the installation of a massive canopy that will provide shade for approximately 3,000 seats in the theater.

In addition to the canopy, Starlight Theatre is planning several enhancements to the venue, which include:

    1. New Production Truss and Light Bridge: These additions will feature mounted screens for improved viewing experiences.
    2. Renovated Restrooms: Restrooms on the west side of the Starlight campus are getting a facelift to improve the overall visitor experience.
    3. Accessible Entry: A new accessible entrance is in the works to ensure inclusivity for all patrons.
    4. Expanded Kitchen: A larger kitchen is planned to cater to the culinary needs of the venue.

This endeavor marks the first capital campaign for Starlight Theatre in two decades. The campaign, named "Uniquely KC," will not only focus on enhancing the venue but will also introduce new community engagement programs, including an Arts Bridge program, technical theater training, and a musical theater residence for elementary school students.

Officials at Starlight Theatre express that their ambitions extend beyond physical improvements. They acknowledge the role the venue plays in fostering traditions for many families in the area, making attending performances at Starlight a cherished experience.

The construction projects under the "Uniquely KC" campaign will be executed in two phases. Phase one is scheduled to commence in the fall of 2023 and is anticipated to conclude by spring 2025, just in time for the summer season. Phase two will follow in the fall of 2025, with an expected completion date of April 2026.

Howard Cohen, President of Starlight’s Board of Directors, emphasized the importance of this campaign, stating, "It’s been almost 20 years since Starlight’s last major capital campaign and now is the time to look ahead and support this institution for generations to come." The campaign aims to broaden the reach of arts audiences, enhance arts access and education, support the arts and culture sector in Kansas City, and create positive economic impacts in the region. The Starlight community looks forward to welcoming the people of Kansas City once these transformative improvements are completed.
